Stories of Terror: Returning To Peace

Stories Of Terror: Returning To Peace

A collection of powerful narratives shared by individuals who have transitioned away from violent extremist groups in Uganda.

About the Project

Welcome to the Returnees Segment of the online Community Stories Exhibition, “Stories of Terror: Back to Peace,” showcasing stories of former violent extremist combatants in Uganda.

This stories exhibition particulary exposes some of the baits and narratives used to lure people into the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF). Through these real stories of former ADF combatants and members, we aim to heighten community awareness of the risks of engaging in violent extremist activities. These members were drawn from among returnees of the earliest days of the ADF in the 1990s as well as those from the most recent years, as recent as 2021. For safety reasons, the names of the returnees have been changed.

“Stories of Terror” is a collaborative effort from the Uganda Muslim Youth Development Forum (UMYDF) and Kofi Annan Foundation under the Bridges to Peace Project. Our mission is to harness the transformative power of storytelling to shift minds, enhance vigilance against violent extremism, and accelerate public engagement in shaping lasting solutions to address conditions conducive to violent extremism and terrorism. This project is funded by the European Union.
